Attention Lane-Scott Electric Members!
The Southwest Power Pool (SPP) is a regional transmission organization (RTO) that manages the electric grid across 14 states in the central U.S. When extreme weather conditions occur, SPP must take measures to proactively mitigate significant strains on our energy resources.
We are communicating with you now, to raise awareness of the potential of escalation. The SPP is projecting conditions this afternoon to be the tightest we’ve seen this summer due to forecasted widespread high temperatures, potential increase in resource outages and potential low output from wind leading into peak hours.
This may require utilities to issue public pleas for energy consumers to reduce their electric use to save resources. If the situation continues to escalate to become energy deficient (more demand for electricity than energy resources are available), the SPP may mandate generation utilities to curtail energy use through controlled service interruptions. These interruptions are a safety protocol to prevent the collapse of the regional electric grid.
If a conservation plea is issued, Lane-Scott Electric will publish the information on our social media pages, and in an e-mail to SmartHub using members. This graphic is an explanation of the Energy Emergency Alert Levels that may occur.
Controlled service interruptions are typically only a couple hours long for any given location and are controlled by the generation utility. For Lane-Scott, that is Sunflower Electric. When the interruptions occur Lane-Scott will only get a few minutes advanced notice and will not have time to communicate with members before this happens. This is why we are communicating with you ahead of time.
