Understanding Your Bill

When you open your electric bill you want to know how much you owe and why. Everyone's bill is slightly different depending on the service, but the basics are the same. Here is an example of the charges on our electric bills!

Billing Cycle

Our bills are generated on the first of the month for the electricity you already used from the previous month. In our bill example below, this is a August bill, generated on August 2nd. The usage being billed is from July. Bills are due upon receipt, and no later than the 25th of the month to avoid a late fee and potential disconnection.

Your Electric Utility Bill in Detail

1 Lane-Scott Electric contact information.

2 Your name and billing address.

3 This is where your Lane-Scott Electric account number appears.

4 The Statement Date is the date the bill is processed and mailed. The due date is the last day your payment must be received by to avoid late fees. Disconnection notices will begin going out after the 25th, with disconnection typically occuring on the 10th of the following month.

5 This is a summary of payment activity since the previous billing period, including payments received, the balance forward (amount still owed from your last statement), current charges, and total amount due.

6 Lane-Scott Electric messages.

7 Service location information including the legal description and service address of the meter.

9 The meter number for your account.

10 Current and previous month kWh readings and peak KW Demand reading for the current month.

11 Bar Graph: Reflects the kWh usage history, comparing previous total monthly kWh usage for the past year.

12 Line Graph: Reflects the peak KW Demand reading history, comparing previous month peaks for the past year.

13 Your current account activity and detailed charges.

  A.  Property Tax Adjustment: Property tax calculation can increase or decrease annually based on the amount of property tax assessed for our power lines and equipment.

  B.  KWH Charge: Actual usage furing the billing cycle, multiplied by your electric rate.

  C.  Demand Charge: The peak 15-minute interval of demand (capacity) used during the billing cycle, multiplied by the demand rate of $0.65 / kw

  D.  Customer Charge: The set rate determined per rate to cover the expenses associated with having service regardless of how much electricity is used.

  E.  ECA: Energy Charge Adjustment. A variable fee, or credit, for when power costs either exceed, or falls below the pre-determined amount set by your cooperative.

  F.  Tax and/or City Tax: Depending on where your service is located, the county or city tax being charged.

  G.  Franchise Fee: Depending on where your service is located, some cities charge a fee for Lane-Scott Electric to have an electric distributino system, facilities and equipment in the city limit.
