Emergency Electricity Interruption Reminder
With the forecasted extreme low temperatures across a large portion of the United States and Southwest Power Pool (SPP) area, we wanted to remind you of the potential for emergency electricity situations that require controlled power interruptions.
If the demand for electricity exceeds supply, a region becomes energy deficient. If this happens, the SPP will first issue an Energy Emergency Alert Level 2 (Conservation Plea) that Lane-Scott will pass on to you, requesting everybody to conserve energy to avoid further escalation. If needed, an Energy Emergency Alert Level 3 (EEA3) will be issued that mandates Sunflower Electric Power Corporation, our wholesale power supplier, to implement temporary, controlled service interruptions to safeguard grid reliability and prevent collapse of the regional electric grid.
When Sunflower implements service interruptions, they must enforce the power interruptions within 10 minutes of receiving the order. Due to the short-time frame, we may not be able to notify members of the upcoming interruption. If possible, we will post a notification on our Facebook page, but this is not guaranteed. Typically, when interruptions are scheduled, they will not last more than a couple hours in one location.
We recommend if you have a generator, to have it safely ready to use. If you have medical equipment that requires electricity and do not have a generator or a back-up plan, call your local sheriff's department or emergency management to get to a location with a generator. If you do experience an outage, report it as normal by calling 620-397-5327, 800-407-2217, or through the SmartHub website or app. Do not assume it is an emergency electricity interruption.
