Always Call Before You Dig
Kansas 811 is the underground utility notification center for the state of Kansas. Regardless of the project, whether excavating or planting a tree in the back yard, always call 811 first.
A federally-mandated national "Call Before You Dig" number, 811 was created to help protect people from harm by unintentionally hitting underground utility lines while working on digging projects. If an underground utility line is hit, you can harm yourself or those around you, disrupt service to an entire neighborhood and potentially be responsible for fines and repair costs.
The 811 Process
Notify the Kansas call center by calling 811. The operator will need information about where the digging will take place.
Wait 2-3 days for Lane-Scott Electric and other utility companies to respond to your request.
Confirm the utilities have been marked. Each utility will mark lines with colored flags and/or paint. If you are not sure if it has been marked, call 811 again to confirm all utilities have been marked.
Respect the marks. Always dig around the marks, NOT on them. Some utility lines may be buried at a shallow depth, and an unintended shovel thrust can have you facing potentially dangerous situations.
What Does NOT Get Marked
Some underground lines in your work area may not be utility owned. These are considered private facilities and will NOT be marked by public utility companies. These can include things like heating systems for pools, electricity to outbuildings, invisible fences, septic systems, sprinkler systems, and satellite dishes. If you think you may have private facilities and are not sure where they are located, you should contact and hire a private utility locator to identify and locate them.
