I am Shelly Turner from Scott City, Kansas. I am a life-long resident of Scott City. I am currently a Senior Vice-President at Security State Bank. I have various roles in our bank. I am the Chief Compliance Officer, a Commercial/Ag Loan Officer, and Chief Trust Officer. I have been with the bank going on ten years. I am also a part of our Asset Liability Committee, Loan Committee, Compliance Management System Committee, and the Bank Executive Team. Prior to Security State Bank, I earned a doctorate in Education and was a 19-year educator in which I taught and was a high school principal, eight of the 19 years.
I am currently on and have been involved in for several years a few state boards and community boards. I am on the Board of Directors for the Kansas Bankers Association Ag Bankers that meets several times a year and plans the Annual Ag Bankers Conference. I am on the State FFA Board of Trustees and am the chair of our finance committee. I am part of the Board of Directors for our Scott Community Foundation in which I am a part of the scholarship committee which awards local scholarships to high school seniors and continuing education students. I was recently asked to be on the Robbins Banking Institute Advisory Council at Fort Hays State University which meets three times per year.
Outside of my “day job” and the committees I serve on, I enjoy being involved in the family farm/ranch with my husband, Brent. We have a cow/calf operation, farm about 10,000 acres, and have a swathing and baling business. In addition to assisting with tagging baby calves during calving season or driving the grain cart during harvest, I also take care of the financial aspect of our farm which is a vital piece in being a successful business.
My husband, Brent and I are high school sweethearts and are both originally from Scott City where we met being involved in athletics while in school. I have lived on a farm most of my life, as my father and grandfather had a few quarters of ground and a cow/calf operation when I was young. After high school and college, Brent worked in the cattle industry at a feed yard, and I was teaching. After about five years of doing this, we had the opportunity to start our own cow/calf operation and become partners with a local farmer/rancher. After several years of being partners, this led us to be able to purchase additional cows, farmland, grassland and step out on our own. Our farm has grown over the last 10 years to where we are today.
Farming and ranching are a critical piece in today’s world. I am proud to be a farmer/rancher’s wife and to have had the opportunities we have had over our lifetime to be involved in agriculture. In addition, working for Security State Bank offers me the opportunity to have an in-depth financial backing to weigh all our options to become the best possible farmers/ranchers we can.
Our adopted son, Manuel Carrillo Turner, currently is a journeyman for Sunflower Electric Cooperative based in the Garden City, KS area. Watching him learn, grow, develop, and work in the field of electrical power has always interested and intrigued me. Electricity is such an important part of our everyday world. I would be honored to be elected to the Lane-Scott Board of Trustees and serve our local community.
